IDU Forum/Opposition seeks international support in Zagreb

During the proceedings of the International Democratic Union (IDU) forum in Zagreb, the Albanian opposition delegation led by Sali Berisha held a series of meetings with senior officials, where the political situation in Albania and the European integration process were at the center of the discussions.

In the conversation with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovi?, emphasis was placed on the necessity for membership in the European Union not to be seen simply as a geostrategic move, but as a process that is strictly based on merit and the fulfillment of the standards of the rule of law.

Berisha expressed concern about the influence of organized crime on the elections, while the Croatian side reaffirmed support for integration based on democratic criteria.

More specific concerns were raised before IDU President Stephen Harper, with the Albanian delegation describing the situation in the country as an "electoral autocracy".

During this meeting, the political protection of government corruption, the transformation of the economy into a structure dependent on drug trafficking, and the persecution of opposition figures were denounced. Harper, for his part, confirmed the Democratic International's support for the Albanian opposition, praising the unwavering pro-NATO orientation of the citizens.

A meeting was also held with the Foreign Minister of North Macedonia, Timco Mucunski, where attention shifted to regional stability and strategic projects.

The parties discussed the importance of respecting the rights of Albanians in the neighboring country as a condition for sustainable coexistence, as well as the need to implement Corridor 8, which is considered vital for the economic development and connection of the Western Balkans with the European market./ CNA
