Whether it's related to gastronomy and culture, new modern attractions and monuments, the power of social networks, or even the desire to get away from it all, lesser-known destinations are becoming increasingly sought after by travelers.

This includes second cities, smaller coastal and rural towns, or capital cities that were once overlooked.

This is precisely the case for the growing destinations highlighted by Tripadvisor's Summer Travel Index , an annual list of destinations that are seeing the biggest year-on-year increase in search volume from British travelers.

The list is based on data from the Tripadvisor website, specifically for trips planned between June and August.

Spain continues to remain the top summer destination, with Alicante ranking first.

The beaches of Barcelona and Mallorca have always been highly sought after, but Alicante is steadily emerging as a strong competitor, offering the same palm-fringed paradise, urban beaches and vibrant nightlife.

It is also home to a small archipelago, Tabarca Island, which offers plenty of tranquility and fresh seafood.

The Portuguese fishing village of Alvor comes in second on the list. The village is located in the heart of the Algarve, Portugal's southern coastal region known for its beaches.

Destinations in Spain, Playa de Palma and Malaga, rank third and fourth respectively.

Malaga's popularity began to grow more than 20 years ago, with the opening of the Picasso Museum, and has since attracted travelers seeking sun and art.

In this ranking, Albania is represented by Ksamil , which ranks fifth among the trending European destinations for summer 2026.

The inclusion of Ksamil in the Tripadvisor list shows that the Albanian Riviera continues to gain attention in the British travel market, positioning itself among the most sought-after destinations of the summer season.

Ksamil ranks ahead of popular European destinations such as Krakow in Poland, Sitges in Spain, Rhodes in Greece, Budapest in Hungary and Dublin in Ireland.

Other popular destinations on the list include Poland's historic capital, Krakow, Budapest with its famous baths and spas, and Dublin, for those seeking greener landscapes and Guinness beers instead of beach sand and sunscreen.
