The President of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has reacted to the passing of former MP and former head of the Constitutional Court, Rustem Gjata.

In his reaction, Berisha states that the former DP MP was one of Albania's most prominent civilians and constitutionalists, while adding that he made a great contribution to replacing the legislation of the communist dictatorship with new laws, as well as to leading the new justice institutions.

The leader of the Democrat Party emphasizes that his monographs on civil law, property, obligations and contracts, civil liability, contractual and non-contractual damages, are a guide for the preparation of hundreds and thousands of young lawyers. Berisha also expressed his condolences to his family.

Rrustem Gjata closed his eyes forever

Dear friends, the sun has set forever for Rrustem Gjata, one of Albania's most prominent civilists and constitutionalists. Former member of parliament for the Democratic Party and respected lecturer, Doctor of Science at the Faculty of Law, Rrustem Gjata would be among the first jurists to support and join the Albanian opposition and the Democratic Party from the very first steps of its establishment. He made a great contribution to replacing the legislation of the communist dictatorship with new laws, as well as to leading the new institutions of justice.

Rrustem Gjata was elected by Parliament as the first President of the Constitutional Court, which he led with high competence and integrity from its establishment until 1997 – the year in which those who came to power by force removed him in an unconstitutional coup.

In addition to his contribution to the jurisprudence of this court, which laid the foundations of constitutional justice in Albania, Rrustem Gjata is the author of numerous articles, references and monographs in the field of law, mainly private law. His monographs on civil law, property, obligations and contracts, civil liability, contractual and extra-contractual damage, are a valuable contribution and guide for the preparation of hundreds and thousands of young lawyers.

Expressing my great respect and appreciation for the outstanding contribution of Dr. Rrustem Gjata, I express my deepest condolences to his honorable family and pray with them that his good soul may find the peace it deserves.
