The 'Ndrangheta controls the territory, the influence of the Albanian mafia

A report by the VI Regional Anti-Mafia Commission in Italy, presented by its chairman Andrea Orlando, has highlighted the presence of powerful criminal organizations and new developments in the structure of organized crime, with particular emphasis on the Albanian mafia.

According to the report, the 'Ndrangheta continues to maintain strong control over the territory, but at the same time, the role and autonomy of Albanian criminal groups has increased, which are becoming increasingly important actors in international drug trafficking.

The report emphasizes that organized crime is especially using seaports for drug trafficking, while a large part of the activity is related to infiltration into the legal economy through logistical and commercial structures.

In the Liguria region, Italian authorities have recorded large drug seizures in recent years, including hundreds of kilograms of cocaine in the ports of Genoa, La Spezia and Vado Ligure, making this area one of the hardest hit in Northern Italy.

According to the report, Albanian criminal groups no longer play only a supporting role, but have become equal partners in drug trafficking networks, specializing in logistics, storage and distribution of narcotics, as well as gaining more and more operational autonomy.

The report warns that cooperation between Italian and Albanian criminal groups has become more structured and complex, presenting a growing challenge for security authorities in Italy and at the European level. / Adapted from CNA
