Coach in trouble after the World Cup, criticism from the president and death threats

South Korea's elimination in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup has sparked strong reactions towards former coach Hong Myung-bo.

After the tournament ended, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung publicly criticized the team's leadership and demanded a thorough analysis of the failure.

The South Korean delegation returned home overnight to avoid protests, but fans were present at the airport and expressed their displeasure. The situation escalated further after numerous threats were made on social media against the coach.

A 41-year-old man living in the United States published a threatening message that forced authorities to increase security measures.

The coach himself stated that he had accepted the position with a sense of responsibility and that throughout the entire period he had acted with the interest of South Korean football in mind.
