Traffic chaos on the streets of Tirana / Citizens spend hours in the car every day

2026-07-03 09:16:00, Sociale CNA

Heavy traffic is turning movement in Tirana into an exhausting challenge, causing huge losses of time and a significant increase in living costs for residents. Data shows that over 200 thousand vehicles circulate on the capital's roads every day, a figure that exceeds the carrying capacity of the current infrastructure by several times.

The high population concentration, the continuous increase in private vehicles and the lack of sufficient parking spaces have caused the average speed of movement to drop to only 10 to 15 kilometers per hour during peak hours. On the main axes, the line of cars remains stationary for entire traffic light cycles.

This massive gridlock has a significant cost to the city’s economy and household budgets. Transportation experts report that drivers lose an average of an hour and a half each day just waiting in long lines, translating into millions of lek spent on fuel each month. Beyond the economic damage, the situation is directly affecting public health. At the most problematic traffic junctions, air pollution levels from exhaust fumes consistently exceed permitted levels, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases for citizens who walk or live near major roads.

The solution to this impasse remains far from being achieved, as alternative modes of transport also show significant shortcomings and do not offer the necessary efficiency. Public transport continues to suffer the same consequences, as urban buses share the same congested lanes with private vehicles, offering no time advantage to passengers. Meanwhile, the infrastructure of dedicated bicycle lanes is often blocked by vehicles parked in violation of traffic rules, discouraging citizens from choosing alternative and ecological means of transport to go to work or school./CNA
