The history of elections in Hungary cannot be read with the history of Tirana.

The history of elections in Hungary cannot be read with the history of Tirana.

The history of the elections in Hungary cannot be read with the history of Tirana. The fact that both our people and their courts are happy is an indication that popular enthusiasm has been overestimated.

Look at the table of winning promises vs. reality in Albania. Term limits for the prime minister and deputies?! Ours are eternal. Direct elections? Ours want an appointment. Limitation of oligarchs? Ours rival their friendship. Independent justice? Ours are against independent justice. Institutional reform? Vetting in politics and anti-corruption? Ours corrupt people say they are anti-corruption champions! Ours are against. Debate on the euro and the EU as a model? Ours are “accept us as we are” and there is no programmatic debate. “Regime” leader who calls and congratulates the winning rival, winning rival who presents the cabinet before the vote and promises anti-establishment measures, etc., etc.

Hungary has been a functional democracy, is a democracy and remains a functional democracy. There have been, are and may be moments of crisis, but democracy functions. Even during communism, Hungarian society opposed the BS and the totalitarian regime 5-10 years after its establishment, while in our country we barely allowed change and even 80 years later the nostalgic are still the majority. We are on the periphery, - we have not been a functional democracy, we are not and it is difficult to be if society is not formed as a culture, mentality, reaction and courage and if we do not accept mechanisms of political rotation & rotation in elites & rotation in generations.

It is neither the first nor the last time that we see, hear, and admire others when they demonstrate democratic qualities that we “only see in movies.” It is neither the first nor the last time that we fail to learn and reflect from the positive practices of “others” and from our own numerous and periodic mistakes.

The history of elections in Hungary cannot be read with the history of Tirana.
