A dictatorship that doesn't need shackles

"A perfect dictatorship has the appearance of a democracy, but in essence it is a prison without walls, from which the prisoners cannot even dream of escaping. In essence, it is a system of slavery, where the slaves, thanks to consumption and entertainment, enjoy their captivity."

Aldous Huxley's quote is extremely accurate and current.

A perfect dictatorship doesn't need barbed wire, soldiers and police on every street corner, and knocking on doors at midnight.

A dictatorship can look like a democracy. It can have elections, a parliament, a media, debates, and formal freedoms. It can even allow protests, which are then labeled and killed.

But, if the citizen no longer has the ability to think independently, to doubt, to object, and to imagine a different reality, then democracy is a facade.

This is the essence of Aldous Huxley's warning. The most dangerous form of tyranny is not that which forces you to obey, but that which makes you want to obey. It is not that which locks you in prison, but that which transforms the world outside the prison into a frightening, uncertain, and meaningless space. It is that which makes you feel unrepresented, useless, superfluous. Then the cell no longer needs walls. It is enough that one cannot imagine freedom.

In this system, control is not only achieved through physical violence. It is achieved through psychological violence and alienation, incessant consumption, constant entertainment and constant distraction, deception and the unrestrained denigration of those who dare to think or act.

Citizens are bombarded with fabricated news, spectacles, scandals, advertisements, and conflicts; they are bombarded with biographies of individuals and elected officials without any intellectual or civic value, until they lose the ability to distinguish the essential from the unimportant.

The goal of modern dictatorships and autocracies is to create happy slaves and voluntary slaves, to create an atrophied society, immersed in noise, which has no time to hear the truth, let alone protest for it.

Slaves of the past dreamed of freedom because they felt its absence.

Modern slaves may not feel it at all. They have choices to make, but not always real choices; they have voices to listen to, but not necessarily independent opinions; they have endless information, but less and less knowledge, and, far more cafes and bars to while away the time...

The greatest danger to democracy is not just the dictator seeking power.

It is the citizen who, out of comfort, fear, or entertainment, voluntarily gives up his freedom, escapes from freedom, because he embraces the routine of the perfect dictatorship, in which prisoners do not seek to escape, having become convinced that the prison is the world.
