15 years since "January 21", where four protesters were killed

On January 21, 2011, during a protest organized by the then opposition in front of the Prime Minister's Office, four people lost their lives and others were injured, in one of the most serious events in the history of Albanian democracy.

The victims were Aleks Nika, Ziver Veizi, Hekuran Deda and Faik Myrtaj.

The protest took place after the publication of a video on the show "Fiks Fare", where Ilir Meta, at the time deputy prime minister, was shown bargaining with former minister Dritan Prifti.

Hundreds of citizens marched on foot from Skanderbeg Square towards the Prime Minister's Office, while the situation escalated into violence and clashes with the police, after stones were thrown and attempts were made to enter the building's courtyard.

Even though 15 years have passed since the event, the victims' families continue to demand justice, emphasizing that those responsible have not been punished.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has described the January 21 file as an important test for the functioning of the reformed justice system, while January 21 remains an open wound in the collective memory and one of the most tragic moments./ CNA
