To predict what will happen to the 215,000 glaciers in different areas of the Earth, scientists used computer simulations. As a basis for these simulations, different temperature increases were assumed and it was calculated how many of the glaciers would melt and how their melting would increase sea levels.

In current conditions, it is thought that compared to the pre-industrial period, the Earth will reach a temperature increase of 2.7 degrees Celsius, which means that by the year 2100, about 32% of the mass of glaciers on Earth will disappear.

"No matter what, we're going to lose a lot of glaciers," study lead author David Rounce, a glacier researcher and professor of engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, told the AP news agency. "But we still have the opportunity to work to limit the number of glaciers we can lose."/DW
