Illegal elections in Ukrainian regions / EU warns Russia of consequences

The European Union has warned Russia that there will be "consequences" for those involved in organizing "illegal" elections in Ukrainian regions occupied by the Kremlin, while Germany said there is a possibility that the bloc will impose new sanctions.

Voting was held over the weekend.

Moscow claimed on September 11 that the ruling United Russia party has won local elections in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian regions.

Brussels condemned the votes, which it said represent "another manifestation of the violation of international law", adding that it will not recognize the holding of the so-called "elections", nor their results.

"We strongly oppose this futile attempt by Russia to legitimize or normalize its illegal military control and attempted annexation of parts of Ukraine's territories," the statement said.

"Russia's political leadership and those involved in the organization will face consequences for these illegal actions."

A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said that the EU could be expected to sanction people involved in the organization of the votes.

Since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the EU has imposed 11 rounds of sanctions on Moscow and people close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Voting for the legislatures installed by Russia in the illegally occupied parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions began on September 8 and ended on September 10.

Russia's Central Election Commission said on September 11 that the country's leading party, United Russia, has won the majority of votes in occupied Ukrainian regions. None of the regions where the votes were held are under the full control of Moscow.

In September 2022, Russia said it had annexed four regions, partially occupied, after fake referendums were staged. Ukraine and Western countries refuse to accept the results of these fake referendums./ REL
