NATO: There is no danger of Romania going to war with Russia

NATO Deputy Secretary General, Mircea Geoana, said that "there is no risk" that the member of the alliance, Romania, will go to war after the recent incidents, when fragments of a drone were found on its territory, near the border with Ukraine involved in the war with Russia.

"The most important thing is to reaffirm the fact that there is no indication of a deliberate action [by Russia] to attack Romanian territory, therefore NATO territory," Geoana told reporters during a visit to a school near the Romanian capital, Bucharest.

The NATO deputy chief's comments come days after Romanian authorities twice confirmed that they had found fragments of drones on their territory, following attacks by Russian forces on Ukrainian ports on the Danube River, located across Romania's border.

But the proximity of Russia's attacks on the rest of the Danube has Romanian citizens living nearby fearing that their country could be drawn into the war.

"When you hear the sounds of war a few hundred meters away from your home, your workplace, they will generate emotion and anxiety," says Geoana, who was previously a minister in Romania and ambassador to the US. "But there is no risk that Romania will get involved in this conflict."

After the second discovery of drone fragments on Saturday, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said they were "similar to those used by the Russian military" and that the incident hinted at "absolutely unacceptable violations of sovereign airspace". of Romania, a NATO ally, with real security risks for Romanian citizens in that area".

"I want to assure the Romanian public, and especially those on the border with Ukraine, that they have no reason to worry," Geoana said, adding that he will visit the area.

Last week, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the allies had seen "other incidents in Poland and elsewhere," but did not elaborate.

Under Article 5 of Collective Security, all 31 NATO members pledge to help any member state that is attacked. At the same time, there are concerns that NATO could get into a war with Russia if some small incident or mistake happens./ REL
