The leader of the Russian opposition, Alexei Navalny, has been sentenced to 19

Navalny was found guilty of founding and financing an organization with extremist activities, but he denies the charges.

He is already serving a nine-year term for breach of parole, fraud and contempt of court. The charges are widely seen as politically motivated.

Since his imprisonment in 2021, Navalny has been held in a remote penal colony, the BBC writes .

A room in the prison, Penal Colony No. 6 in Melekhovo, which is 240 km east of Moscow, was turned into a makeshift courtroom for the Kremlin's most vocal critic. The proceedings took place behind closed doors.

Russian state prosecutors had sought a 20-year prison sentence for Navalny in an even more restrictive "special regime colony." Such prisons are usually reserved for Russia's most dangerous criminals.

In a message posted on social media before the verdict, Navalny expressed his belief that he would be given a "Stalinist"-style prison designed to intimidate other potential opponents.
