They staged a coup / The deposed president of Niger asks for the help of the USA

Niger's ousted leader, Mohamed Bazoumi, has called on the United States and "the entire international community" to help "restore constitutional order " after last week's coup.

In a reaction written in the American daily Washington Post, President Bazoumi said that he is writing as a "slave".

Riots have erupted in this West African country since his fall.

On Thursday, the coup leaders announced that they would withdraw the ambassadors from France, the US, Nigeria and Togo.

Through a televised statement, they said that the duties of these four ambassadors have "finished".

A few hours before the decision was made, Niger's ambassador to the US, Kiari Liman-Tinguiri, told the AFP news agency that the army " must reflect " and " understand that this affair will not succeed ".

Nigeria is a major producer of uranium - the vital product for nuclear power plants - and is located in key migration territory between North Africa and the Mediterranean.

In his call, Bazoumi warned that the link of the coup leaders with the Russian mercenary group Wagner, which operates in many other countries in the region, is seen as an extension of its harmful influence in Niger.

"The entire central region of the Sahel could fall under Russian influence, through the Wagner group, whose brutal terror has fully manifested itself in Ukraine."

Finally, many supporters of the coup in Niger have been heard chanting pro-Russia slogans and wearing the colors of the Russian flag.

The coup has been condemned internationally, including the USA, the European Union and France - which once had Niger as a colony./ REL
