Russia adds Norway to the list of unfriendly countries

Russia has added Norway to the list of "unfriendly countries", claiming that this country is targeting Russian diplomats abroad.

Such a step further worsens Russia's relations with the West.

The Russian government published the order on Thursday, through which it limits to 27 the number of local staff that can be engaged by the Norwegian diplomatic mission in Russia.

In April, Norway expelled 15 Russian diplomats, accusing them of conducting intelligence activities under diplomatic cover.

Russia has retaliated by expelling 10 Norwegian diplomats, and this step for Norway was an "act of revenge".

The Foreign Ministry of Norway has said that it has not yet received official information from the Russian authorities, but that there is no basis for declaring that Norway is unfriendly towards Russia.

"Today's situation is caused by Russia's war in Ukraine. Russia itself can choose to end the war", said the Norwegian Foreign Minister, Anniken Huitfeldt.

She added that the two nations, which share the border in the Arctic, are interested in the functioning of diplomatic relations.

The United States and the Czech Republic were added to the list of countries unfriendly to Russia in May 2021, while Greece, Denmark, Slovenia, Croatia and Slovakia were added in July 2022./ REL
