North Korea has confirmed it is holding American soldier Travis King, as it responded for the first time to requests for his whereabouts.
The news was confirmed by the United Nations Command, which oversees the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea.
The 23-year-old American soldier crossed the border between the two Koreas on July 18, as he was on an escorted trip.
The UN command has refused to give more details about the North Korean response "so as not to interfere with efforts to send the person home" .
However, the response hints that Pyongyang may be willing to open negotiations.
The North Koreans have previously accepted the request for information, but this is the first time they have responded.
Before crossing the border, Travis King spent two months in prison in South Korea on assault charges.
He was released on July 10, and plans were for him to head to the US to face disciplinary proceedings, but managed to leave the airport and join the escorted trip.
King is an intelligence specialist who has been in the US Army since January 2021, while he went to South Korea as part of a rotation./ REL
