Russia announced on Wednesday that it has launched naval maneuvers in the Baltic Sea, amid rising tensions with its European neighbors over the conflict in Ukraine.
Russia regularly holds naval exercises in the Baltic Sea, often in response to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) maneuvers in the area.
The Russian navy has played a key role in Moscow's war against Ukraine, striking the Western-backed country with cruise missiles launched from ships and submarines, in addition to other weapons.
"Ocean Shield-2023 naval exercises have started in the Baltic Sea," the Russian Ministry of Defense announced in a statement, AFP reports.
Russia has announced that 30 warships and boats, as well as 20 other support vessels, will take part in the maneuvers, along with 6,000 military personnel.
During the maneuvers, the Russian navy will exercise the protection of sea routes, the transportation of troops and military cargo, and the protection of the coastline, the Russian ministry said in a statement.
"It is planned to carry out more than 200 combat exercises, which will also include the use of weapons", the Russian authorities announced./ REL
