The sexual abuse report casts a shadow over the Pope's visit to Portugal

Pope Francis arrives in Lisbon on Wednesday for a global gathering of Catholic youth that is taking place in the shadow of Portugal's major clergy sex abuse scandal and criticism of the event's high costs.

He goes to Lisbon after an independent commission released a report in February that found "at least" 4,815 children had been sexually abused by members of the country's clergy -- mostly priests -- since 1950.

Hundreds of thousands of young people from around the world have descended on Lisbon to welcome Pope Francis, who will land at Lisbon's military airbase at 10am local time.

World Youth Day was devised by the late Pope John Paul for young Catholics in their teens or early 20s and is held every two or three years in a different city. This will be the first since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Lisbon, large stages have been erected, screens and posters with the Pope's face have been installed.
