Message of Pope Francis/ "Europe to play the role of a peace-making bridge

Pope Francis called on Europe to act as a "bridge and peacemaker" to end the war in Ukraine.

He made these comments on August 2, at the start of his five-day visit to Portugal.

The pope, 86, was welcomed with military honors in Lisbon, where 1 million pilgrims from around the world are expected to take part in events to mark World Youth Day.

This religious event - which is marked for a week through religious and cultural events held every three years in different cities - comes at a time when the Catholic Church is reflecting on its future and continues to face priests involved in pedophilia scandals.

During the first speech in Portugal, the Pope said that Europe should ask itself where it is going if it "does not show the world the ways to achieve peace and creative ways to end the war in Ukraine".

"The world needs real Europe. There is a need for Europe to play the role of a bridge and peacemaker", he added during the speech given to officials and diplomats in Lisbon.

Pope Francis has recently had health problems and is now using a wheelchair and walking stick.

Two months ago he underwent abdominal surgery. However, during his stay in Portugal he will give 11 speeches and hold about 20 meetings.

Otherwise, World Youth Day was created in 1986 by Pope John Paul II and is the world's largest gathering of Catholics, marked through various events, including concerts and prayer sessions.
