A ship with 3,000 cars on board catches fire/ One dead and dozens injured

One person died and several others were injured after a huge fire broke out on a cargo ship off the Dutch coast around midnight on Wednesday.

Fire engulfed the ship off the Dutch coast with around 3,000 cars on board, killing one and injuring several others.

The fire may have been caused by one of the 25 electric cars on board, but a Coast Guard spokesman told CNN the cause is still under investigation.

Lifeboats and helicopters were used to get the 23 crew members off the ship after some were thrown into the water.

The ship, which sails under the flag of Panama, was on its way from Bremerhaven in Germany to Port Said in Egypt.

The crew tried to extinguish the fire themselves, but did not succeed, according to the coast guard./CNA.al
