Denmark increases border controls after Koran burnings

Denmark's police are tightening border controls after the recent Koran burnings, which have affected the security situation, the Ministry of Justice in this country has said.

Sweden took a similar decision earlier in the week.

Anti-Islam activists in Denmark and Sweden have damaged and burned copies of the Koran - the Muslim holy book - which has angered the Muslim world and prompted calls for governments to stop the practice.

"The authorities believe that it is necessary at this time to increase the focus on who enters Denmark in order to respond to specific threats," the Danish Ministry said in a statement.

The tougher border controls will initially be in place until August 10.

"The recent burnings of the Koran, as security officials have also said, have affected the current security situation," said the Minister of Justice, Peter Hummelgaard, in a statement.

Both Denmark and Sweden have condemned acts of Koran burning and said they are considering the possibility of drafting new laws that would prohibit such a thing.

However, critics have said that such decisions endanger the freedom of expression, which is guaranteed to citizens by the constitution.
