Imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny is expected to be sentenced Friday on extremism-related charges.

Navalny has been convicted of embezzlement and is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence, but the new terrorism charges risk extending his prison time for decades.

He and his supporters consider all the charges to be politically motivated.

Nvalny, 47 years old, has said that he expects "Stalinist punishment" in the trial on August 4.

He said that the formula to calculate his sentence is simple, since it is only necessary to take into account that the prosecutor requested a sentence of 20 years and that figure should be reduced by 10-15 percent.

"This is the 'Stalinist punishment'. They have asked for 20 years and they will sentence me to 18 or something years. It doesn't really matter, the main goal is intimidation" , he said through a letter sent from the high security prison.

Navalny is charged with six violations of the Criminal Code, including creating and financing an extremist community, calling for extremism, rehabilitating Nazism and involving minors in dangerous acts.

This case is related to Navalny's activity in his Anti-Corruption Foundation, which was declared an extremist organization in 2021 and banned from all activities in Russia.

He was arrested in January 2021, after returning to Russia from Germany, where he was treated for poisoning with the Novichok nerve agent.

He has repeatedly said that his poisoning was ordered by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin./ REL
