The record temperature in China, the thermometer marks -52.3 degrees Celsius

In the Xinjiang region in western China, a temperature of minus 52.3 degrees Celsius was recorded, breaking a 64-year-old record, Chinese media reported.

The record was broken on Sunday in the city of Tuerhong, and the previous lowest temperature in Xinjiang of minus 51.5 degrees was recorded on January 21, 1960.    

According to Chinese media, due to the storm and freezing rain that engulfed that part of China, road and rail traffic has been stopped.

Meteorologists have warned of icy roads and rain is expected across China until Thursday.

The most rainfall is expected in Mongolia, northeastern China, central Hubei province and southern Hunan province, reports Reuters./ CNA
