Dubai's reputation in decline/ The city of luxury's luster fades

The war in Iran has brought consequences for the entire world, but the most critical ones have been felt by neighboring countries that were once considered paradises on earth.

The conflict has led to an exodus of wealthy individuals, tarnishing Dubai's reputation as a haven for the global elite and a city synonymous with luxury.

Dubai has empty shopping malls, deserted streets and hotels that have halved their prices or closed down altogether. One of the latter is the Burj Al Arab hotel, famous worldwide for its sailboat-shaped design. The hotel's reservations department said the hotels are closing for a year for "renovations."

Prices have fallen and luxury hotels now offer stays at prices comparable to low-cost hotels in Europe.

The Park Hyatt Dubai is facing empty rooms and possible staff cuts. At another luxury hotel, Raffles Dubai, there is also minimal occupancy.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is another cause that has led to lighter traffic, reduced tourist activity and delays in relocation plans, along with the departures of some high-net-worth residents from Dubai.

Real estate deals have been put on hold and many foreigners are starting to question staying in Dubai for long periods of time.

Even if missile and drone attacks stop, the ongoing danger of a hostile Iran will continue to pose a serious threat to regional stability. /CNA
