Iran may withdraw from nuclear treaty after UN sanctions are reinstated

Iranian lawmakers discussed on Sunday how to respond to reinstated UN sanctions over its nuclear program, which took effect at midnight on Sunday, with one parliamentary lawmaker suggesting that Tehran could potentially withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The sanctions again freeze Iranian assets abroad, ban arms deals with Tehran, and penalize any development of Iran's ballistic missile program, among other measures.

This came through a mechanism known as "snapback," included in Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, and comes at a time when Iran's economy is already struggling.

Iran's rial currency is currently at a record low, increasing pressure on food prices and making daily life much more challenging. The prices of essential items in Iranian households, such as meat, rice and other dinner table staples, have all increased. /CNA
