Marine biologists are attributing an increase in sea turtle attacks on swimmers at Marathi Beach in Chania, Crete, to tourists and fishermen feeding the animals, which alters their natural behavior.
Greek media reports that he has treated many people over the last two years for this reason.
"Turtles do not have teeth, but very strong jaws that cause large bruises by crushing muscles," said Greek doctors.
Wildlife expert Dimitris Fytilis from the conservation group Archelon explained that feeding teaches turtles to associate humans with food.
"They start treating swimmers as competitors for food and try to drive them away by biting," the expert said.
Similar incidents have been reported in other Greek coastal areas. Experts advise swimmers to wave their arms and legs underwater to scare away approaching turtles./ CNA
