Political deadlock in France/ Macron expected to name new prime minister within

The Elysee Palace said French President Emmanuel Macron will name a new prime minister within 48 hours, dismissing speculation that new elections could be imminent.

Outgoing Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said the possibility of dissolving parliament was starting to fade after talks with political parties over the past two days.

"There is a majority in parliament and this is the majority that is inclined to avoid new elections," he said.

On Monday, Lecornu became the third French prime minister to resign in less than a year, pushed out by an unstable parliament deeply divided along ideological lines.

Macron asked Lecornu to stay for two days to build a consensus between the parties on how to get out of the current political crisis.

In a television interview, Lecornu gave no indication of who the next prime minister would be, and although he said his mission was “over,” he did not seem to rule himself out entirely. He said that, in addition to not wanting new elections, most MPs also recognized the urgent need to approve a budget by the end of the year.

However, he acknowledged that the path to forming a government was still complicated due to divisions within parliament and politicians aiming for the upcoming presidential elections.

France's political impasse began after snap elections in July 2024. Since then, no party has had a majority, making it difficult to pass any laws or reforms, including the annual budget.

The big challenge facing Lecornu and his two predecessors has been how to deal with France's devastating national debt, which this year reached 3.4 trillion euros (2.9 trillion pounds), or almost 114% of economic output (GDP), the third highest in the eurozone after Greece and Italy.
