School attacks/ Erdogan: We will tighten gun laws and increase penalties

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made a public statement after the cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace.

Erdogan announced that after serious attacks on schools last week, Turkey will tighten gun laws and increase penalties for gun owners who pass them on to their children.

Sixteen people were injured in the attack carried out last Tuesday by a 19-year-old former high school student in Sanliurfa. The gunman then committed suicide.

The next day, a 14-year-old boy killed eight students and a teacher at a school in Kahramanmaras, using a gun his father had found in the family home. The gunman was shot in the leg and found dead.

Erdogan also said the Turkish government was considering additional restrictions on minors' access to social media platforms.

"We will further strengthen our visible and invisible presence in the dark corridors of the internet using artificial intelligence. Increasing school-law enforcement cooperation and developing new working models will also be among the steps we will take in this process. Today, I have given the necessary instructions to our relevant ministers to do whatever is necessary without hesitation," the Turkish president said. 

Emphasizing the importance of the family and its special status, Erdogan stated that the family is a person's first school and that education and socialization begin within the family.

He further added that another factor in the escalation of violence is television series, films, and black news that have a negative impact on children.

"In productions, especially those with themes of crime and violence, portraying perpetrators as powerful, influential, exempt from punishment, or even respected individuals undermines our young people's connection to reality. Similarly, the detailed presentation of the methods used by perpetrators in committing crimes in news broadcasts and the repeated broadcast of attack footage as in recent events, increases the risk of imitation among our children," Erdogan said. /CNA
