Baerbock: The world will hold Putin accountable during the G20

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said late Tuesday that Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, will be held responsible for the war in Ukraine and the global consequences it has caused, during the summit of the group of 20 most industrialized countries - G20, this week.

"If Putin thinks that in two years the world will forget who is responsible for the war in Ukraine and its global consequences, he is very wrong," Baerbock said Tuesday before leaving for the G20 foreign ministers' meeting. in Brazil.

"We will not give up the basic principles of the United Nations and we will strongly support Ukraine as long as necessary and until its people can live in peace and freedom again," she added.

Russia launched its unprovoked and illegal invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Ukraine, the war in the Gaza Strip and the threat of expanding the conflict in the Middle East are expected to play an important role during the G20 meeting.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to attend the meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

"With our humanity and commitment to international law, we fight against the ruthlessness of actors, such as the Russian Government", she emphasized.

The whole world will benefit "if we all stick to the rules we've agreed on together," she said.

The G20 was founded on the belief that "common solutions are possible if we stand by each other and join forces," Baerbock underlined./ REL
