Despite overtourism taking over parts of Spain, France and Italy, there are still many places where package holidays and weekend getaways have yet to catch on.

'Smart' holidaymakers are increasingly casting their nets in search of pristine sand or empty monuments, eschewing the usual destinations in favour of lesser-known places such as Albania and Slovenia.

However, you don't have to go to some exotic place to get away from it all. There are corners of Spain, Italy and France that have mysteriously escaped the attention of bus travelers, day trippers and package holidaymakers.

Northern Albania

The country's mountainous interior remains largely off the tourist map, despite having so much to see, from monuments of the communist past to remote villages.

When you get to the north of the country, things get really exciting.

In Valbona, alpine pastures give way to empty trails, while the lively city of Shkodra, inhabited since the Bronze Age, has beautiful promenades and a 2,500-year-old castle.
