There has been an outbreak of COVID in the control tower at London Gatwick Airport and over 164 flights have been canceled as a result.

In total, flights are canceled for almost 25,000 passengers.

Bosses at the West Sussex hub said they would reduce the number of journeys to a daily limit of 800 flights.

Nearly a third of National Air Traffic Services (Nats) staff are said to be unavailable for a variety of medical reasons, including COVID. It means that there will be about 29 fewer flights tomorrow, 40 fewer on Thursday, 65 fewer on Friday and 30 fewer on Sunday.

The outage is likely to cause major problems for those using Gatwck.

Gatwick boss Stewart Wingate described the move as 'a difficult decision' but said it was necessary.

Last summer, Heathrow airport introduced a daily limit of 100,000 passengers as it struggled to cope with post-pandemic travel surges, with travelers facing long queues amid a shortage of ground staff and airlines canceling thousands of flights.
