Western Balkans Report: Failed incinerator projects, harm to the environment and

A report compiled by the Bankwatch network delves into a critical analysis of the situation with waste incinerators in the Western Balkans.

According to data, the region's governments and the companies that serve them have found several incinerator projects as a solution, turning it into a regional trend that is not bringing any benefits.

Based on the report, these projects, some of which are still on paper, are proof that the region's institutions are continuing on a path that is technically unsustainable, dangerous to the environment and health, financially costly, and incompatible with EU policy and legislation on waste and energy.

For Albania, three incinerators have been listed, in Tirana, Fier and Elbasan, which cost Albanian taxpayers over 350 million euros in 30 years, according to state audit figures from the Supreme Audit Institution.

Concrete examples, besides Albania, include projects in Tuzla and Kakanj in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the proposed 50 MW waste-to-energy power plant in Podgorica, and the Vin?a incinerator in Belgrade.

All this, at a time when, even according to specifications from Eurostat, the amount of urban waste recycled per capita (kg/person), from most Western Balkan countries is reported at very low values ??or does not report any concrete data at all.

This limited data and in many cases its non-reporting, as highlighted in the report, confirms the almost total lack of separate collection and recycling systems in all countries in the region, as well as shortcomings in waste management. /CNA
