Fight against crime and corruption/ Klodjan Braho part of the forum of chief

The Head of SPAK, Klodjan Braho, and the Head of the Anti-Corruption Section, Vladimir Mara, participated in the Third Consultative Forum of Chief Prosecutors of the Western Balkans, held in Sarajevo.

The meeting focused on strengthening regional cooperation in the fight against organized crime and corruption, as well as on coordination with European partners and Eurojust on cross-border investigations.

According to the organizers, the forum discussed increasing the effectiveness of cooperation between justice institutions in the region, with a particular focus on the rule of law and the exchange of information in complex investigative matters.

At this high-level meeting, Eurojust President Michael Schmid stated:

“After almost four years of close cooperation through the Eurojust-led Western Balkans Criminal Justice Project (WBCJ), we can safely say that we have made significant progress. The project has built trusted partnerships with judicial authorities across the Western Balkans and, to date, has supported 88 cross-border investigations – including 23 Joint Investigation Teams – involving EU Member States, Western Balkan partners and other non-EU countries. Importantly, it is particularly encouraging to see the broad consensus among the participants in the Consultative Forum Meeting that we will continue along this path of ever closer operational cooperation and strengthened links between prosecutors and judges in the Western Balkans and their counterparts in EU Member States.”

During the event, the new Practical Guide for Joint Investigation Teams was also presented, which aims to assist justice professionals in the Western Balkan countries in coordinating joint investigations.

The guide was developed by two expert prosecutors engaged by the WBCJ Project and is tailored to the legal and operational needs of prosecutors and law enforcement authorities in the Western Balkans region. It provides practical guidance on the functioning and added value of JITs, as well as the support available during their establishment and operation.

By addressing the specific challenges faced by Western Balkan authorities and promoting the effective use of JITs, the Guide highlights the role of Eurojust and the WBCJ Project as key partners in facilitating judicial cooperation with EU Member States and beyond./ CNA
