Malaj: Money flowing from criminal sources will impoverish Albania

Former Minister of Finance, Arben Malaj, has warned that money coming from criminal sources hinders Albania's rapid and sustainable development.

In an interview with Syri TV, Malaj stated that this type of money will further impoverish Albania and deepen social division.

According to him, a portion of the population will become "new millionaires" and the middle and poor classes will find it difficult to meet their basic needs, starting with housing.

"We, some economists, have been warning for about 8 years. Tolerating criminal money cannot help Albania to have a higher rate of development, sustainable development and enrichment in an orderly manner. Criminal money creates criminal products. As an Albanian and as a researcher, I am horrified by the idea that prevails in the governance of the Renaissance that Albania should tolerate criminal money to the maximum because this is how other powerful countries have become. In the entire history studied, the size of criminal money in the history of America or other countries has not been dominant in the economy. And secondly, which is the most important, there the power of the state has been so great that it has never allowed criminal money to run those countries as is suspected in our case and from other reports, that the government has a tolerant influence towards the mafia and in some cases even cooperation with organized crime. The money that is being poured into Albania from criminal sources will impoverish Albania. It will not make it richer. It will bring a "Greater polarization will deepen the social divide, where some will be the new millionaires or the new government oligarchs, and the middle class and the poor class will find it harder to meet vital needs, starting with housing ," Malaj said. /CNA
