Korça appreciates Zai Fundon/ Filo: Polyhedral figure, it was my proposal that the square be named after him

Korça has appreciated the figure of Llazar Fundo, the Korça intellectual and visionary man who sketched a big dream for Federal Europe, being at the side of Alterio Spinelli.

On the initiative of the mayor of Korça, Sotiraq Filo, at Thursday's meeting of the Municipal Council, the proposal was approved that the small square in front of the municipality should be named after one of the most prominent figures of Korça who have left a mark in history, that of Zai Fundos.

The Mayor of Korçë, Sotiraq Filo, tells CNA the proposal given by him in honor and appreciation of Fundo , showing the great values ??and contribution that this figure has given to Albania and to Korçë in particular.

Filo considers Llazar Fundon a polyhedral figure, who unfortunately is little known for the values ??he represents. The mayor says that Fundo was a personality of Korça and Albania, a patriot who loved his country and his city.

"At yesterday's meeting of the Municipal Council, a proposal of the mayor of Korça was approved to name a space next to the municipality as 'Llazar (Zai) Fundo' square. It was my proposal to evaluate this multifaceted figure I would say, which is unfortunately still little known for the values ??he represented and the contributions he made. Zai Fundo was a personality of Korça and of Albania, a patriot who loved Korça, this city, the country, he came from abroad, he returned to Korçë to give his contribution in the fight against the fascist invaders", he said.

Filo added that Zai Fundo has a comprehensive contribution in many areas and that this decision-making by the Municipal Council serves the promotion and recognition of this important figure of our history.

"Llazar Fundo was a complex figure, it is enough to mention the fact that he was one of the first supporters of communist ideas, considering the idealization of these ideas, but at the same time he was one of the first disappointed, seeing that how communism could turn into totalitarianism, specifically in the Soviet Union during the Stalin years. He was one of Stalin's first critics and was sentenced to death by the Comintern. As far as Albania is concerned, he was undoubtedly a patriot, a staunch anti-fascist.

Precisely on the steps of the town hall where we are today, he gave a speech and was one of the personalities, who was imprisoned by the fascists on the island of Ventotena, and there together with other personalities, I would single out the Italian anti-fascist Alterio Spinelli, have was the co-drafter of the Ventotena manifesto, which lays the foundations of what is today the United Europe where we want to integrate. This is a part of Zai Fundo's patriotic contribution, he has been a versatile figure to contribute in other fields as well, in literature, aesthetics and more. Therefore, I believe that this proposal of the mayor and this decision-making by the Municipal Council, serves the promotion and recognition of this important figure of our history", emphasized Peleshi.

The great contribution of Llazar (Zai) Fundos has brought the evaluations of the citizens of Korça, politicians and intellectuals who know his figure well. This year coincides with the 80th anniversary of the execution of Fundo, as it was the political leader of the SP, Niko Peleshi, who announced this initiative in advance, which was made official this Thursday.

Llazar Fundo is a complex figure in Albanian history. A polyglot intellectual with a total of 9 foreign languages , who was born in a family of merchants from Voskopoja in Korça, then in his youth he became a communist, was shot by the communists and left his testament in front of the firing squad: " Communism that we idealized as Christ, in terms of wickedness, it surpasses even the devil. I was a communist, but I will never die as one. I could lie to save my head, but I can't do that. The photos that are in the bag should be given to the mother in case she is alive ".

These are the words of an intellectual of European caliber. A former member of the Comintern who subsequently denounced and accused Stalin and his crimes.

The history of the dictatorship in Albania accuses him as a traitor, someone else as the founder of the Communist Party, but the facts and truths revealed show an intellectual who stood with values ??and dedication by the side of the greatest people of the time.

Fundo was arrested by the Italians on May 5, 1939 and has nothing to do with the establishment of the NPSH by Dushan Mugosha, Miladin Popovic and Enver Hoxha as their tool in November 1941. Llazar Fundo was interned in Vetontene and when in Albania the Yugoslavs founded The Communist Party, he signed "Il Manifesto Di Vetontene", which is the document where the roots of the European Union were laid. One of its drafters and signatories is Llazar Fundo, who was often called Zai.

Fundo is appreciated by Italian, German, French, Albanian historiographers, etc., as one of the greatest philosophers of the time, a politician and a principle full of ideas that sought a Europe without borders./ CNA TV
