The ship with the suspected hazardous waste, which was returned to Albania from Singapore, has been at sea for 4 days about 1 kilometer from the Port of Durrës, while the Port Authority has not yet allowed them to enter the port. The prosecutor's office seized on Monday the load of 102 containers, in the wake of the investigations started two months ago, while members of the government affirmed today in the Assembly that the country and the appropriate infrastructure are being prepared for their unloading and safe storage. The waste was returned to its place of origin after 4 months, while the Basel Action Network BAN raised the alarm about the material, which it said contained toxic dust from the chimneys of metallurgical factories.
Although officially with the cargo seized by the prosecutor's office for about 4 days, the ship with 102 containers returned to Albania on Monday from Singapore, which brought to the country of origin the remains suspected to be poisonous dust from the chimneys of metallurgical factories, is standing one kilometer in near the Port of Durrës, while the Port Authority still does not allow it to enter the port.
As soon as the cargo arrived with the Turkish ship Moliva from Italy, after several weeks of travel, near the largest port of Albania from where it had started, the prosecutor's office ordered that the containers not be opened and stored in a safe place from an environmental and physical point of view and are monitored by cameras without interruption.
The prosecutor's office, which has been investigating this case for two months, under suspicion of "smuggling of prohibited or restricted goods", "air pollution through the release of fumes, gases and other toxic radioactive substances, as well as "misuse of duty public functionary", ordered four days ago the Port Authority, the Captaincy, the Customs and the Border Directorate, the Police and the Customs Investigation to seize the containers as material evidence in order to carry out the relevant expertise.
Meanwhile, sources from the Port Authority have informed the press that they still cannot allow the entry of these wastes into the port, which require, according to the order of the prosecution, special security conditions, as well as continuous surveillance with cameras, without providing a space suitable.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Ervin Hoxha, in response to the demands of some opposition MPs, affirmed in the Assembly that the order of the prosecution that came out on Sunday is enforceable and all the institutions in charge are coordinating on the relevant infrastructure for the containers.

The containers left Durrës on July 4 for Thailand, which refused the cargo after the alert given by the non-governmental organization "Basel Action Network BAN", which had its representatives in Durres last Monday, the day they returned. where they started from. BAN called on the Albanian authorities for transparency, to publicly open the containers and for analysis of samples by several independent groups in different laboratories.
The organization expressed the almost complete certainty that this cargo sourced from the metallurgy of Elbasan contains hazardous metal waste beyond the permitted levels, in addition to its readiness to assist Albania closely in dealing with this sensitive issue.
The Albanian government has declared that it is for the realization of exhaustive analyzes and reliable and verifiable legal evidence , leaving aside conjectures and speculations.
Investigations into the event are also being carried out by the European Union Anti-Fraud Office, OLAF based in Brussels, alongside the prosecutor's office of the coastal city./ VOA
