NASA wants to get passengers from New York to London in less time than it takes to watch an average in-flight movie.

America's space agency announced this week that it has been exploring supersonic passenger air travel.

According to NASA, the next phase of its high-speed air travel research is underway.

The world's current fastest passenger plane, the French and British-built Concorde, made its fastest flight between New York and London on February 7, 1996, crossing the Atlantic in just 2 hours 52 minutes and 59 seconds.

NASA hopes to cut Concorde's flight time almost in half.

In its press release, NASA said it hoped to speed up flights from New York to London "up to four times faster than is currently possible".

According to NASA's Hypersonic Technology Project Manager, Mary Jo Long-Davis, the development phase for the new hypersonic passenger jet will focus on reducing noise during takeoff and landing.

Both the United States and many other countries ban supersonic flights over land, citing noise pollution from noise and other issues./ CNA
