Artificial intelligence in aid of national security

The US Department of Homeland Security is looking at ways to use artificial intelligence to detect illegal shipments of synthetic fentanyl into the United States.

The US-Mexico border, an important gateway for the flow of people and trade, is increasingly being used to smuggle dangerous drugs like fentanyl.

To address this growing concern, US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced in April the creation of a new task force.

"Drug traffickers are becoming more sophisticated and powerful," he declared.

Among other things, the group will examine ways artificial intelligence can be used to detect and prevent the entry of illegal drugs into the United States.

"We will consider using this technology to better detect fentanyl shipments," Secretary Mayorkas said.

Pat Simmons, former director of Customs and Border Protection, says there are systems on the market today that can be further enhanced with AI technology.

One example is what is called the Muon Tomography system, which can provide a more accurate image of the object being scanned, compared to the X-ray technology currently in use.

"X-rays can't penetrate a dense payload, but the Muon tomography system can, allowing officers to see exactly what's inside the payload," says Pat Simmons.

This can be particularly effective with containers, where fentanyl can be hidden.

Another way that Artificial Intelligence can help is through the analysis of vehicle crossings at the border.

"Who are the people who pass, how often, as well as the vehicle and license registration, how often do they pass? So there is some kind of information that can be extracted and analyzed by Artificial Intelligence."

The new task force will report its findings on the use of Artificial Intelligence for National Security in the coming months./ VOA
