Messaging app WhatsApp could be banned in the UK because of the risk of conflict between the British government and the company's management, British ministers warned today.
The cause of the dispute is the Online Safety Act, a major piece of legislation that will regulate almost every aspect of online communication in the UK, the Guardian reports.
For more than four years, that law has been in preparation and eight secretaries of state and five prime ministers are working on it. The legal text has more than 250 pages and only the content of this document is presented on 10 pages.
The bill gives regulator Ofcom the power to fine social networks for using anti-terrorism technology or content depicting child sexual abuse, with fines of up to 10 percent of global turnover for non-compliant services.
Companies that own online platforms must make "maximum efforts" to develop or acquire technology that would allow them to comply with legal norms, according to a report in the London daily.
