Betting scandal, over 1 thousand players suspended. One played in the Champions

Turkish football is going through one of its most difficult moments in recent years, following a wide-ranging investigation into illegal betting involving players and referees at several levels of the championship. The Turkish Football Federation has announced the suspension of over 1,000 players, who have been referred to the disciplinary committee, after being suspected of involvement in sports betting, a practice strictly prohibited by FIFA rules.

Among those suspended is Eren Elmali, the 25-year-old defender for Galatasaray and the Turkish national team. He has been one of the team's starters in this season's Champions League matches. Elmali, in a statement published on social media, admitted to placing a bet about five years ago on a match that was not related to his team. The player was excluded from the national team's squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Bulgaria.

The Federation's list also includes another Galatasaray player, Metehan Baltaci, among the 1,024 players involved in the investigation. Meanwhile, the Turkish Federation has decided that matches in the third and fourth divisions will be suspended for two weeks to allow for the investigation. Matches in the Super League and the second division will continue according to the normal schedule, to avoid disrupting the championship's progress.
