Jakarta sinking/Indonesia, plans to move capital

Jakarta is located on the northwest coast of the island of Java, it is the capital of Indonesia and the largest and most developed city in the country.

Jakarta is home to approximately 10.6 million people within its territory and another 30 million in the metropolitan area.

According to "Business Insider", the Indonesian capital is under the process of sinking and currently about 40% of its territory is below sea level.

The Indonesian government is planning to move the capital to Nusantara, a city being built on the east coast of Borneo.

Local media reports that the construction of Nusantara will cost Indonesia about $35 billion and will not be completed until 2045.

In recent years, sea level rise has caused Jakarta to sink faster, which has accelerated the government's decision to relocate the capital.

The decision to relocate was made by the Indonesian president, Joko Widodo, in August 2019. The location of the new capital will have a low risk of earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.

As environmental experts warn, a third of the capital city of Jakarta could be completely submerged by water by 2050.

Indonesia has about 276 million inhabitants spread over more than 17 thousand islands, 200 thousand are working in the construction of Nusantara, whose initial population is expected to be about 500 thousand.

Governments and politicians have confirmed that the new capital of Indonesia will be a "green and fully powered by renewable energy" metropolis.

In the new capital of Indonesia, Nusantara, it is planned to build a 50 megawatt solar plant, while the population will move only with electric vehicles.

Its construction is expected to cost 35 billion dollars. The government has committed to providing only 20% of the funds and is trying to find other sources of funding.

Indonesia is not the first country to be forced to move its capital, Brazil did so with Rio de Janeiro in 1960, in 1991 the capital of Nigeria, Lagos was moved from Abu.

But the relocation of Indonesia's capital Jakarta to Nusantara is the first time that it comes as a result of the climate crisis, writes "Business Insider"./ CNA
