The United States' National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) plans to send astronauts to Mars sometime in the 2030s, but before the first ones go to the Red Planet, it will observe the effects of the stay of a crew of four in a simulated Martian environment for about a year.

Located at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) is a three-dimensional printed structure with four small bedrooms, two bathrooms, a work area adjacent to a robot station and an exercise room, a medical room and an outdoor sand area, where various instruments are placed, to simulate the surface of Mars.
