The Secret Protection of Jews: The Secret 1943 Letter That Accused Berat

It is about an archival document marked "SECRET", dated June 21, 1943, through an alarming letter addressed to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Consul General of the Fascist Militia, Giuseppe Volante, openly accuses the local authorities of Berat, the Prefecture and the Questura, of "Italophobia" and secret protection of about 100 Jews sheltered in the city.

Below is the transcribed document:

ALBANIAN FASCIST MILITIA COMMAND

DEVELOPMENT: Political

No. prot. 1833/B
Tirana, June 21, 1943

SUBJECT: Signaling

HIS EXCELLENCY, THE MINISTER OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS
TIRANA

The following letter arrives from a reliable confidential source:

"About a hundred Jewish political exiles are concentrated in Berat.

They are considered extremely dangerous elements, as a vast organization of subversives is being created around them.

They hoard all kinds of goods, which they then resell at extremely high prices.

They develop active propaganda against the Axis and against those Albanian Government Authorities who sincerely work for a more concrete cooperation with Italy.

They are said to be protected by the local Questure and Prefecture, against which serious suspicions are raised of anti-Italian sentiments (Italophobia) and of secret collaboration with rebellious and extremist elements.

It is requested, as a necessary measure, that this treacherous and harmful group be dispersed to other less dangerous localities than Berat, or be interned directly in a concentration camp, in order to prevent further damage from them.

COMMANDER GENERAL CONSULAR

(Giuseppe Volante)
