Koço Kosta, today 85 years old/ Writer of disobedient literature

Koço Kosta, since he appeared in Albanian literature with his first book “Në rrugje” (1967) and throughout his entire journey as a writer, has been and remains one of the most unique and challenging Albanian writers of Albanian literature, a creator who chose freedom of creation over the ideological discipline imposed by socialist realism. A writer of a special dimension, he refused with his work to be placed in line, remaining “on the street” and thus paying the costs of being the writer of disobedient literature.

Koço Kosta never became a propaganda writer, and his work comes to us as evidence of artistic disobedience where man and his psychological truth stand above any predetermined aesthetic scheme.

This disobedience was not simply a thematic stance, but a deep formal structure that exploded through a fractured and polyphonic narrative.

Koço Kosta consciously avoided simple chronological linearity, giving us a work where voices, times, and testimonies intertwine organically.

His characters move "on a razor's edge", touching on major taboos of the time such as eroticism, anxiety, and loneliness, which official censorship tried to erase from public consciousness.

Above all else, his work is built with a brilliant, rich, and deeply organic language that knows no artifice or academic strain.

Koço Kosta's language flows with astonishing naturalness, imbued with the vibrant lexicon of the land and landscape of the South, giving the work an extraordinary vitality.

Through this pure and diverse Albanian, he managed to create a literary legacy that defies time, confirming himself as the writer who defended the dignity of free speech in its most difficult days.

On this 85th anniversary of his birth, Koço Kosta deserves above all the gratitude of readers and Albanian literature itself.

Therefore, if today the state authorities or the ignorant leaders of cultural institutions have not remembered to honor him as he deserves, Koço Kosta has no reason to feel hurt. His work has always been at war with the mediocrity, conformism and ignorance of those who usually administer culture without ever managing to understand it. Precisely for this reason, his literature still remains alive, challenging and free, like the writer himself who created it.

May you live long, Koço Kosta, and with other works worthy of your name!/ CNA
