Instead of a postcard, today on the 70th anniversary of the birth of Bujar

Bujar Hudhri is not just a publisher. He is one of those rare people who have lived the book as a mission and not as an ordinary profession. Through "Onufri", he has built not only a publishing institution, but a space of dignity for Albanian literature, a prestigious address where the name of the author is respected and where the book is treated as a monument of national culture.

At a time when the long Albanian transition risked relativizing values, disorienting the reader, and turning culture into rapid consumption, Hudhri chose the most difficult path: to defend the seriousness of the book and the authority of the written word. He created a new standard of publishing, where aesthetic quality, linguistic correctness, editorial responsibility, and careful selection of authors became fundamental principles. Through this vision, “Onufri” became more than a publishing house; it became an institution of culture and memory.

His contribution is not measured only by the titles published or the big names that the “Onufri” catalog carries. It is measured by the impact he had on the very relationship of Albanians with the book. Gudhri helped restore faith in Albanian literature, at a time when the reader was in danger of turning away from it. He defended Albanian authors, created space for new talents, promoted the classics, supported Albanological studies and contributed to the preservation of our cultural and historical memory.

In the history of Albanian literature of the last thirty years, his figure stands as a pillar of support, reminding us that behind every important book there is always a publisher with vision, passion and high human integrity. Because books are not born only from the talent of the author; they survive and take on a public life thanks to people who believe in their value and who are willing to sacrifice to bring them to the reader.

Bujar Hudhri has proven that publishing in Albanian is not simply an economic venture. It is an act of love for the language, for the culture and for the nation itself. It is a responsibility to protect the Albanian word from oblivion, banality and mediocrity. And precisely for this reason, his activity remains a rare testament to dedication in Albanian cultural life.

On this 70th anniversary of his birth, we do not come only with congratulations and kind words. We come with gratitude. With respect for what he represents and for what he has done for Albanian literature, for Albanian authors, for books and reading, for our culture and for the very dignity of the blessed Albanian word. / CNA
