23 people are killed in an attack in southwest Pakistan

Gunmen shot dead 23 passengers after identifying them and pulling them out of buses, vehicles and trucks in one of the deadliest attacks in restive southwest Pakistan, police said Monday.

The killings took place overnight in Musakhail, a district in Balochistan province, a senior police official said. The attackers torched at least 10 vehicles before fleeing the scene.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, in separate statements, called the attack "barbaric" and promised that those behind it would not escape justice.

The attack came hours after the outlawed separatist group the Baloch Liberation Army warned people to stay off highways, but there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The separatists have often killed workers and others from the country's eastern region of Punjab as part of a campaign to force them out of the province, which has been wracked by an insurgency for years.

Most of the previous killings have been blamed on this outlaw group and others seeking independence from the central government in Islamabad. Islamic militants also have a presence in the province, reports the "AP" news agency./ REL
