US Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz is of German descent, as is former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump.

The Democratic candidate for vice president in the USA, Tim Walz, has German roots in the northern area of ??the Black Forest. The ancestors of Timothy James "Tim" Walz came from Kuppenheim, the municipality in Rastatt County said. There are no direct descendants in Kuppenheim anymore, it is said. After Walz's candidacy became known in early August, the small German town of about 8,500 people received a high number of media calls.

The city archives then worked with the Historical Society to uncover other, further details, such as relatives of Tim Walz living in Kuppenheim, it said. But since all five sons of Anton Walz of Kuppenheimer (1808-1871) emigrated between 1867 and 1884 to the USA there are no longer any direct descendants in Germany.

Tim Walz's great-great-grandfather is Kuppenheim shoemaker Sebastian Walz (1843 - 1915), who immigrated to the US and moved to Nebraska in 1867. There he married Canadian Anna Mary Berger. Their eldest son was John Frederick Walz (1874-1961), the great-grandfather of the vice-presidential candidate and US governor of the US state of Minnesota, Tim Walz. Perhaps there are also residents with this name related to the American politician, as the name Walz is quite widespread. Determining them accurately would take a long time and data protection makes publication impossible.

Republican presidential candidate and former US president Donald Trump also has German roots, about 100 kilometers north of Kuppenheim. His grandfather Friedrich Trump (1869-1918) came to America in 1885 from Kallstadt, Germany./ DW
