Trump: Iran deal could reopen Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump said a "widely negotiated" memorandum of understanding for peace with Iran could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the main sea route for global oil transport.

Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform that the final aspects of the agreement are still being discussed and that the details will be made public soon. According to him, the agreement would help reduce tensions following the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran, which has shaken international energy markets.

However, the Iranian Fars news agency disputed Trump's claims, reporting that the draft agreement would give Iran greater control over the strait and that the US president's statements "do not match reality."

According to reports from Axios and the New York Times, the US and Iran are close to a temporary deal that would allow duty-free passage through the Strait of Hormuz during a 60-day ceasefire. In exchange, Iran would be able to sell oil freely, while the US would ease some sanctions and blockades on Iranian ports.

The draft also includes Iran's commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and to negotiate a suspension of high-level uranium enrichment. According to reports, Tehran may also agree to give up its stockpile of near-weapons-grade enriched uranium.

On the other hand, Iran has stated that the priority remains avoiding new American attacks and ending regional tensions, including the conflict in Lebanon between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.

Pakistan has also been involved in the diplomatic efforts. Pakistani army chief Asim Munir held talks in Tehran with Iranian officials to broker a broader peace deal.

Diplomatic sources said the proposed framework envisions three phases: the formal end of the war, the resolution of the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, and the launch of negotiations for a long-term agreement on Iran's nuclear program./ CNA
