Hot summer in Western Europe/ Record temperatures expected

Western Europe is bracing for an unusual heatwave, with temperatures expected to exceed 30°C in Portugal, Spain, France and the United Kingdom over the coming days, while in some areas they could reach up to 38°C.

According to meteorological forecasts, temperatures in cities such as Paris and London could rise to 32°C, while in southwestern France and some regions of Spain values ????up to 35–38°C could be recorded. French authorities have warned that new records could be broken for the month of May, as temperatures are expected to be well above the seasonal average.

The French meteorological service Météo-France has declared that the country is experiencing a "premature and intense heat event", caused by a mass of hot air from North Africa trapped by a high-pressure system.

In the United Kingdom, the Met Office has issued warnings for extreme heat, with temperatures likely to reach 33°C, approaching historic records for the month of May.

Experts say these temperatures are 5 to 10 degrees above the seasonal average and more like July and August conditions than spring. In Spain, meteorological authorities are warning that the heatwave could last for several days and bring record temperatures.

According to authorities, the phenomenon is linked to a "heat dome" that traps warm air in the region, significantly increasing temperatures. Meteorologists warn that such extreme events could become more frequent and intense due to climate change.

A tragic case has also been reported in Spain, where a two-year-old girl lost her life after being accidentally left in a car during extreme temperatures in the Galicia region.

Authorities warn citizens to avoid sun exposure during the hottest hours, hydrate the body and take extra care of children and the elderly over the coming days. / CNA
