Shooting near the White House, perpetrator killed after clash with the Secret

A gunman was killed after a shootout with Secret Service officers near the White House on Saturday evening, while a bystander was injured.

According to a statement from the US Secret Service, the suspect approached a checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, pulled a gun from his bag and opened fire on officers.

Security forces immediately responded, shooting the perpetrator, who was transported to the hospital, but did not survive his wounds.

A bystander was also injured in the incident, but authorities have not yet released details on his condition. The Secret Service said it was not yet clear whether the person was hit by the shooter's gunfire or during a shootout with police.

Law enforcement sources, according to Reuters, said the suspect was a person with emotional problems and had previously been issued a "stay away" order.
